Erste & Neue Kellerei

There won't be many co-operatives that were founded at the instigation of a parish priest. The farmers scraped together the last of their savings and helped enormously, while continuing with their last hard work in the vineyards at the same time. On the 28th of October 1900 the first harvested grapes were stored in the co-operative's own cellars. As the Kaltern wine-growers were pressing and commercialising the wine themselves, the were able to considerably improve their situation.
The Kaltern Wineries Cooperative was merged in 1986 with the New Wineries Cooperative to become a company. In 1991, the Josef Baron di Pauli Winery Cooperative was also incorporated.
With 553 members and 313 ha of cultivation land, our cooperative is on of the largest producer of quality wines in South Tyrol. Every year an average of 40.000 dt of grapes is delivered, 75% of which are red wine varieties and 25% of which are white wine varieties.
On the gentle, sometimes fairly steep hillsides, ripen the grapes Kalterersee, Vernatsch, Weissburgunder, Blauburgunder und Cabernet. In the high-lying vineyard sites Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Gewürztraminer give outstanding results. The ERSTE & NEUE Cooperative cultivate a wide range of grape varieties.
In the dephts of the cellar the native painter Robert Scherer narrates his stories with paintbrush and colours in a cycle of figured images. Symbolism and colour whisk us away into a world between mythology and bible, between history and topicality. This important commission was conferred on the occasion of the 100-year jubilee of the ERSTE & NEUE Cooperative.
We have set ourselves a goal that can be summed up in one simple word: quality
