Kellerei Cantina Terlan

Long life, complexity and character - these are the primary features of Cantina Terlano's quality wines. This is due primarily to the high mineral content of the Terlano soils, which has positive effects in terms of stability and gives the wines a striking freshness and full body to go with their long life.
In 1893, 24 local wine growers set up a joint production, sales and marketing organisation. That was the beginning of one of the first winery co-operatives in South Tirol. Today the Terlano Winery has about a 120 members with an average cultivated area of 160 hectares, which makes it one of South Tyrol's smaller wineries. It's compact size is a big advantage in terms of quality assurance.
Cellar Master Rudi Kofler, who is a trained agronomist, employs the modern winery facilities to produce both authochtonous and internationally esatblished red and white wines, all of them with the italian DOC label ("Denominazione di Origine Controllata"). Production and marketing are organised on the basis of three distinct quality lines.
The Terlano Winery has a unique wine archive, housing some 20,000 bottles covering very vintage since 1955, as well as some earlier ones.
The location of Terlano, at the interface between the Alps and the Mediterranean to the South makes it one of the most diverse in terms of the types of the grapes grown. In Terlano these features are combined to fruitful effect. The warm days and cool nights that are tipical of the ripening period guarantee a good balance between acidity, sugar and aromatic content.
Terlano's vineyards extend from the gentle hillsides at the valley floor to the steep mountain slopes with their alpine conditions for growth. The vineyards lie on a striking red porphyry base of volcanic rock with large mineral crystal deposits. The high mineral content gives the wines their distinctive, mineral flavours and contributes to their extraordinary longevity.
This combination of soil properties and microclimate produces wines with a pronounced character that the Terlano Winery deliberately fosters - from the grape to the bottle.
