Laimburg: A Winery with That Special
Historical Heritage - Laimburg Province Winery lies at the foot of Monte di Mezzo (Mitterberg) in South Tyrol's Bassa Atesina (Südtiroler Unterland). The site, through which the famed Via Claudia Augusta once passed, has a long history of viticulture and wine trade. The recent discovery of 2,400-year-old grape seeds between the Laimburg Castle ruins and the winery underscores the region's significance as the oldest wine-producing area in German-speaking Europe. For more than forty years, Laimburg has striven to uphold this legacy. Deeply rooted yet forward thinking, the relatively young winery already has a history of achievement.
Research and Practice - As a branch of Laimburg Research Centre of Agriculture and Forestry- which is itself dedicated to the advancement of viticulture in SouthTyrol - Laimburg Winery is a public institution with an entrepreneurial spirit; it has been at the juncture between research and agricultural practice for many years. Covering a total area of 45 hectares of cultivated land, Laimburg grows and produces the entire spectrum of South Tyrol's wine varieties, from the autochthonous Lagrein to the traditional Pinot Blanc. New ideas in viticulture and enology are being implemented through numerous studies that pave the way for innovative developments within the region.
The Wines - Apart from two newly developed cuvées, Laimburg makes traditional varietal wines, which are divided into two different lines - each with its own clearly defined style. The Estate Wines are vintage wines with a focus on varietal character, matured either solely in stainless steel or partially in large oak barrels. The Manor Selection comprises wines with distinctive personality: they are mostly aged in barrique or are specially selected. The Ladin names originate from legends of the Dolomites and express the character of each wine.
