Mayr Josephus, Unterganzner estate

The Mayr-Unterganzner estate
In the year 1629 Simon Mayr "Kuchenmayr" from Völs am Schlern purchased the Unterganznerhof. The Mayr family have lived and worked there for more than 10 generations. The property has always been passed on from father to son, that is why it is called "an inherited estate". Only through generations of experience, dedication, devotion, and solidarity on the estate, is it possible to produce such supreme quality wine in its present form.
The location
The Mayr-Unterganzner family's estate is built on porphyritic rocks at 285 meter above see-level on the eastern edge of Bolzano, where the Eggentaler rivulet flows into the Eisack river.
The vineyards
The „Mayr-Unterganzner wine farmers" have in spite of all modern developments dedicated themselves to the pergola culture. However the pergola system is modified so that a large amount of vines per hectare combined with a low grape yield assure the best quality.
The „Tatzelwurm": a winged dragon as a trade name and quality guarantee
The Unterganzner family's wine estate is a member of the winegrowers association "South Tyrolean Quality Wine Estates", a group of ambitious wine growers with similar views and opinions regarding superior quality wine expectations which they make sure are implemented from the beginning in the vineyard to the final bottling.
Curiosity: Figs, chestnuts and olives
Today we not only have classical wine cultivation at Unterganzner estate but also apples, figs, nuts, chestnuts, kiwis and recently also olives are cultivated and harvested.
Wine tip - Lagrein
The most important wine type on the state is the Lagrein. It is given very special attention: through decades of selection work new vine derivatives have originated and these continue to guarantee a high wine quality product.
